Our research activities deal with design and synthesis of new conjugated materials designed to spontaneously organize themselves at the nanoscale leading to novel properties that will be used in (nano)optoelectronics.
Our approach is multidisciplinary.
Organic synthesis, macromolecular chemistry, pi-conjugated architectures, liquid crystalline semiconductors, organic electronics, molecular nanostructures at surfaces
With expertise in organic chemistry and macromolecular synthesis, we have two main research interests.
Topic#1. We are currently working on new liquid crystalline (macro)molecular semiconductors combining n-type and p-type building-blocks. By an appropriate design these materials can nanosegregate generating controlled 3D multilayered nanostructures (lamello-columnar or lamello-lamellar organizations) including separate channels for charge carrier transport (electrons and holes). These new self-organized ambipolar architectures are evaluated in OFETs.
Topic#2. We have introduced two new molecular tools in the field of supramolecular self-assembly at surfaces in order to go ‘beyond’ the pre-programmed self-assembly. More particularly, we recently introduced the Janus tecton, a two faced 3D build-block forming well-ordered 2D adlayers on surface and exposing a desired function lifted from the substrate. We use these tectons for the non-covalent functionalization of graphene and this later versatile platform for the realization of new functional 2D materials.
